Before you leave the terminal
Two things to check first.
Entry and visas
Leaving the terminal means entering the UAE, so you pass immigration on the way out and again on the way back in. Many nationalities receive a visa on arrival or visa-free entry; others must arrange a visa in advance, and some airlines offer a short transit visa for stopover passengers. Check the official UAE entry rules or your airline before you travel, and allow time for the queues at both ends.
Transfers and timing
Typical journey times from DXB: Downtown and DIFC around 15 to 25 minutes, Jumeirah and the beaches 25 to 35 minutes, Dubai Marina and the Palm 35 to 45 minutes. Evening rush hour (roughly 5 to 8 pm) can add 20 minutes or more. The transfer is not included in any listing: book it separately. Taxis wait outside every arrivals hall, ride-hailing apps work at DXB, and the Metro Red Line runs from Terminals 1 and 3 towards Downtown and the Marina. Be back at the terminal at least 90 minutes before departure; for peak hours or Terminal 3 long-haul flights, plan for two hours.

Common questions at DXB.
Can I leave Dubai airport during a layover?
Yes, if your passport allows entry to the UAE (visa-free, visa on arrival or a visa arranged in advance) and your bags are checked through to your final destination. You clear immigration on the way out and on the way back in, so a 6-hour layover is the practical minimum.
How early should I be back at DXB?
At least 90 minutes before departure, and two hours for peak evening departures from Terminal 3. Every LayStop listing already deducts that buffer from the layover it says it fits.
Is there luggage storage at DXB?
Left-luggage counters operate in the terminals for a fee; check the airport website for your terminal and current hours. If your bags are checked through to your destination you will not need them.
Which terminal will I arrive at?
Emirates and flydubai use Terminal 3; most other carriers use Terminal 1; Terminal 2 serves a smaller group of airlines. Tell the provider your flight number when you book so the start time matches your arrival, and allow for the walk from your arrivals hall to the taxi rank.
