DOH · Doha
Hamad International, twenty minutes from the old souq.
Hamad is one of the calmest big hubs in the world, and Doha sits right next to it: Souq Waqif, the Corniche and the Museum of Islamic Art are a short taxi or metro ride away. On a 6-hour layover a spa, a walk through the souq or a dhow on the bay all fit. Here is what fits, and what to check before you leave the terminal.

Before you leave the terminal
Two things to check first.
Entry and visas
Leaving the terminal means entering Qatar, so you pass immigration on the way out and again on the way back in. Many nationalities can enter Qatar visa-free; others must arrange a visa in advance, and Qatar Airways passengers may be offered a transit visa for longer stopovers. Check the official Qatar entry rules or your airline before you travel, and allow time for immigration at both ends.
Transfers and timing
Typical journey times from DOH: Souq Waqif and the Museum of Islamic Art around 15 to 20 minutes, West Bay and the Corniche towers 20 to 25 minutes, Katara and The Pearl 25 to 35 minutes. The Sealine desert is about an hour south. The transfer is not included in any listing: book it separately. Taxis wait outside arrivals, ride-hailing apps work in Doha, and the Doha Metro Red Line runs from the airport to Msheireb, next to Souq Waqif, in about 20 minutes. Be back at the terminal at least 90 minutes before departure.
How to book your transferRules and journey times change. Confirm entry requirements with your airline or the official authorities of the country you land in, and treat journey times as typical, not guaranteed.
DOH questions
Common questions at DOH.
Can I leave Hamad airport during a layover?
Yes, if your passport allows entry to Qatar (visa-free or a visa arranged in advance) and your bags are checked through. Doha is close, so a 6-hour layover is enough for one proper experience in the city. Allow time for immigration on both sides.
How do I get from Hamad to Souq Waqif?
About 15 to 20 minutes by taxi or ride-hailing outside rush hour, or around 20 minutes on the Doha Metro Red Line to Msheireb station, a short walk from the souq. Book the return for a time that keeps the 90-minute buffer intact.
What if my layover is too short to leave?
Stay airside. Hamad has lounges, day rooms and a wellness area inside the transit zone, so a short layover can still be a real rest. The Recharge cards for Doha show what fits.
